About Us

Sunbud Bakery is a wholesale bakery in Oakland, California.  Our mission is to feed curiosity, motivate a mindful relationship with food, and share our love of buckwheat with all.

JENNIFER BAI - President and Partner

I have over 10 years of experience as an art director creating corporate identity projects through advertising-editorial pages.  I worked for  clients such as Neutrogena, Cotton Inc., SELF magazine, and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.  In 2001, I had the great pleasure of co-founding a web portal site called PleasantConcept.com, my entry in what has become my desire to make impact to a balanced lifestyle.

A twist of fate brought me to Northern California which lead me to having a renewed relationship with food.  I enrolled in the Tante Marie Culinary School in San Francisco, and then apprenticed under the tutelage of Chef Hiro Sone at Terra Restaurant.

I am the proud mother of 7 year old boy and a dedicated foodologist, striving for high standards of food.  I feel privileged and proud to be part of that transcending food culture in California.

ATSUKO WATANABE - Founder and Advisor

I take pleasure in all things diverse, which has brought me to where I am today, an entrepreneur with an intense passion for food. My journey begins with my mother's cuisine, a memory of a childhood filled with delicious Japanese homecooking. Food was taken very seriously. Taste was foremost.  Indulgences were encouraged in moderation. It continues in New York, a mecca of food diversity and creativity. During my years of working in the advertising industry, I ate my way through restaurants, bakeries and food markets.  In 2001, I pursued my lifelong dream and moved to France where I studied the art of French pastry and cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu, and then as a pastry chef at a Parisian restaurant. My move to San Francisco in 2006 led me to join the wholesale bakery Donsuemor, Inc., as the Director of Marketing and Product Development.

I continue my dream to share my love for delicious and mindful food through the launch of Sunbud Bakery. I also have the honor of being a board member of Meals on Wheels of San Francisco, an organization that delivers food and social services to homebound seniors. I am committed to contributing to the communities that are changing the way America eats.

Special Thanks

Sunbud Bakery would like to thank Kit Yiu for his creative inspiration and most of all, for his loyalty and friendship.  Kit's imagination and strive to try all things undiscovered were the catalyst of how Sunbud Bakery came to being.  After planting a seed, he moved on to Okinawa, Japan, where today, he is the founder of Mission Coffee.
